Increasing use of open coal and log fires has seen an increasing demand for fireside accessories
In recent years, due to the increased cost of gas, there has been a significant increase in the number of households who have reverted back to having an open fire.
Whereas with a gas fire there was no need for any accessories the situation with an open fire is different . You need a fire screen to keep those wayward sparks from burning the carpet and keeping those inquisitive children a safe distance from the flames. You need some fireside tools. A poker, a brush, a shovel and a pair of tongs should see you well equipped for all the tasks associated with an open fire. You need to consider something to keep the coal in ie a coal bucket or hod. Then what about the logs which you wish to keep next to the fire . A log basket should do the trick. If you think that is everything then think again. You have forgotten about a pair of fireside gloves to keep your hands clean, special long matches to start the fire, a pair of bellows to help a stubborn fire get started, an ash caddy to take the ash away ; and maybe a briquette maker to give you a supply of free fuel from all your redundant Sunday papers.
In the old days your grandmother would use most of these accessories to keep the old fire burning but she only regarded them as utility items and appearance , in the everyday room at least, was not important. The situation now is different. Today"s family view fireside accessories as a key design feature and want them to match the style of the fireplace , ranging from tradition through to modern contempory
The problem is where does one look for such an array of choice and style . You may immediately think of one of the well known sheds but you will be disappointed by the range and quality that their stock , if any .The best places are the individual fireplace retailers with a long history of dealing with real solid fuel fires, especially those specialising in restoring and retailing antique fireplaces.
